My Thoughts
Written September 13, 2001

This was not just an attack on New York City and the United States Of America, but on the entire world. It has hit me very hard because the first job I ever had was in a store one block away from the World Trade Center. There was a little church across the street, where I would go during my lunch break for a few quiet moments before I went back to work. One morning before work, I watched a man climb the outside of Tower 2. I firmly believe that a memorial park should be built on the site where the Towers once stood.

Don’t think for one moment that I have forgotten the people who perished in Washington DC and Pennsylvania, because I haven’t. It’s just that the attack on New York City was an attack on my home. I was born and raised there. It’s where I married my husband. It’s where my mother and brother live. It’s in my blood. It’s a part of who I am, and now I feel like a part of me is missing.

On some of the news forum boards on MSN and Netscape, are posts from people who applaud what happened, and are taunting Americans with things like, "We got you, and there’s nothing you can do about it." I have 2 words for those people: Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We will not stand idle while cowards murder our people. Your time will come, and it will not be pretty.

Among the few things left standing right after the Towers collapsed, were the poles flying the flags of the United States, New York State, and New York City. As I was watching the overnight rescue efforts, and saw the flags back-lit by the search lights, it reminded me of "The Star Spangled Banner"…. "and the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night, that our flag was still there…."

New York City, Washington DC, and the United States may be bruised and battered, but we are unbroken and unbowed. We will overcome this horrific tragedy and we will endure. The sooner life gets back to as normal as possible the better. We have to show these cowards that they have not accomplished their ultimate goal of shattering the spirit of the United States and its people.

On the news this morning, I saw an interview with a young Marine from South Carolina. When asked if he was willing to go to war he said " Yes sir!" When asked why, he replied, "They have made my country afraid, and no one does that on my watch!" If all of our armed forces are cut from the same cloth as that young American, the fate of our country is in good hands indeed. God bless you all, and God bless America.
